Chapter 2/10

grungy looking man looked at all of us and hesitated like the ones before him.  He clinched his fist trying to fight against the reaper’s will.  The reaper spoke and said to him "all shall now be known”.  And thus began playing another sad and beautiful melody.  The man started with his name: "I am Virgil Wulf.  My story starts a couple months back; I was down on my luck and lost my job recently as a blacksmith.  My liege found a foreigner that had a new method of making a lighter blade and at the same time making it sharper, so I was replaced with that damn Khajiit.  I wasn’t too sure where to go, but I was hungry.  I was always hungry.  It had been weeks since I had a good meal.  I happened to stumble over a drunk homeless beggar one night.  The drunk looked up at me and started to curse at me since I tripped over him.  I looked around and saw he had some bread that someone must’ve given him not long before I tripped on him.  The bread smelt fresh.  I started grabbing for it and the old fool struck at me with a knife he had—it hurt too.

wasn’t going to put up with that from a beggar half my size and I wanted his bread too.  Damn, it smelt so good.  I grabbed a nearby rock and smashed him over the head with it.  It was so easy…….he fell down, convulsed a bit, and then didn’t move--he lay before me completely still.  I still don’t know if he was just knocked out or actually dead.  It didn’t bother me any.  I got the bread and took off.  I ran and found a nearby cave to hide out in.  It was perfect timing too, as it started to rain.  I started a small fire and heated up the thick loaf of bread and enjoyed it as a grand meal.  It was so heavy and thick and the grains were so tasteful that I can recall savoring each bite so vividly.  I did happen to steal some tomatoes from the vendor while he wasn’t looking when I was in town, so I cut them up and added some water and salt, making a light tomato soup for dipping the bread.  I let the bread soak up the soup and had a decent meal for the first time since losing my employment.  I looked out of the cave and in the rain far off in the distance I could see a small trail of fire.  I remember thinking it was so weird to see that.  It looked like the trail of burning grass was staggered about as if a person were hunting something—all over the place.  I assumed it was a mad mage messing around with what little magic he knew and left it alone and laid my head down.

awoke from a terribly loud sounding shriek.  It was a shrill sound of loneliness and pain.  I can’t say that I had ever heard something like that before.  It made the hair stand up on the back of my neck!  I quickly jumped up and looked around and all I could see was that the path of fire was put out from the rain…….  The terrible shrieking sound echoed in my mind.  I was possibly dreaming I thought.  As day break spread out across the snow covered plains.  I gathered up my small camping supplies and left the cave.  I journeyed southward because I was so tired of the frigid north of Skyrim.  It took about a full day’s travel to reach Rorikstead.  As luck would have it, I saw a couple leaving their home as the sun was setting.  I figured they were probably off to an elegant party from the way they were dressed.

had a friend that was a thief and using the skills he taught me, I was able to pick the lock to their door and let myself in.  I hit the jackpot.  I found coin piles as well as some armor that looked like it was recently cleaned and of course I helped myself to their kitchen.  That was a good meal…..it beat what I thought was good out in the cave for sure.  I finished eating quickly and grabbed what jewelry I could find in the place.  I was in the couple's room taking what I could from there when I saw a nicely crafted mace—not much different from what I would have made myself.  I was reaching for it when I heard a noise behind me.  I turned and looked….

t was a little girl who obviously didn't feel well and had the sniffles.  The damn parents must have left her home since she was sick.  She stared at me without saying a thing and I, just as wide-eyed as she was, stared back.   She had long curly dark brown hair with big innocent eyes.  She looked as if she wanted to speak, or run, or scream, or something.  She must’ve not been older than 8 or 9.  She just kept looking at me…..  She had seen my face.  If I left her, she could easily report what I looked like.  A recently fired blacksmith for a lord not too far from the north would be an easy sketch for the guards to recognize.  I hated knowing what I had to do...

grabbed the mace and lunged at her, striking down on her little leg with my foot--causing it to break.  She let out a scream which was quickly muffled by my hand.  I could feel her lips trembling against my palm.  She fell back and rolled over.  I watched her for a second writhing on the floor.  Then the lil' one gave me a surprise.  I watched in awe as this tiny thing reached out
toward the door and slipped her fingers into the crack in the floor and dragged herself slowly away.  I was expecting her to just cry and beg for her life, but she was a little fighter.  I didn't necessarily like what I had to do, but I had to do it.  I rolled her over on her back with my boot and as her arms finished flopping over, I slammed the mace down into her face with all that I had.  It crushed her skull in halfway to the back of her tiny head.

didn’t want to stick around much longer, the parents would probably be returning shortly so I stepped over the poor girl and left the house.  I managed to sneak my way through the back of the village and kept on the path south.  I left the main road and found a tree to rest by.  I hadn’t been resting for all but 10 minutes when I heard the most terrifying sound a second time—the shrill shriek.  This time it was closer.  I once again jumped to my feat and looked around.  I saw a path of fire.  This time the fire burned brighter—the flames were closer….  and heading straight toward me.  The night air was cold and I could see my own breath as I my heart started racing.  What the hell was this?

heard the shriek again.  This time it sounded as if it came from behind me and also it was closer than the last.  The shrill high pitched sound of terror echoed all around the blackness that surrounded me.  I started running.  I made my way towards a small hill area that I knew concealed a hideout.  The screaming continued off in the distance.  As I ran, I looked back and I saw another path of flames.  Again, they followed the path I had taken from the house.  I didn’t know what demon this was but I had no intention on finding out either.  The night seemed darker than usual as I continued to make my mad dash to the hills.

fter the long run I had made it to the peak of the hills.  I was gasping for breath and the cold, night-winter air hurt as my lungs drew it in.  I started my ascent and started looking for a nearby hideout I knew of.  It was a small, one room cabin that some bandits that I made some armor for used once in a while.  I looked back and I could still see the fire burning way off in the distance.  This time though, I hadn’t heard any shrieking so I was good.  It didn’t take long for me to find the cabin and after checking to make sure it wasn’t currently occupied, I entered it and let out a sigh of relief.  I dropped my gear and the bloodied mace.  I made a fire in the fire place and closed my eyes to finally get some sleep.

ut of nowhere, I heard the shrill god-awful shriek again.  It sounded as if it were only a few feet away from me this time.  I started praying to the divines for mercy and for aid to fend off whatever unholy demon was nearby.  I stumbled back and drew my mace…  I could see lights flickering from under the cabin door.  I mustered the courage I needed and I rushed out with my mace held high—ready to smash down on anything that was near me.  Once outside, I was astounded at what I saw:  the entire cabin had been encircled in flames!  The wall of fire that imprisoned me was taller than I was.  It was then, for the first time that I saw the demon.  It was in the form of a young woman.  She was effortlessly gliding through the air all the while hell-fire danced around her elegant frame.

cursed her and tried swinging my weapon through the fire.  It was no use, the fire-wall was too thick.  The she-bitch approached me and I could see in detail how her skin looked charred and maggots followed along behind her.  She passed in front of me, letting out her shrill cry of terror and I jumped out away from the wall of fire I was near.  I had no where to run.  There she was, floating in the air just a few feet away from me.  She let out one more cry and glided towards me with demonic haste—lighting her path on fire.  The maggots that swarmed her had started swarming me as well and they bit at me!    It felt like small pins entering and leaving all over my body.  With each bite, I could feel the surrounding area slowly going numb--becoming useless--and eventually my body fully succumbed to a temporary paralysis which hindered my ability to fight them off. I did my best to ignore the pain and readied my weapon. The young girl didn’t deserve what I had to do to her, but this demon sure as hell deserved what she was about to get.

he appeared before me faster than I could even swing.  She grabbed my face and shoved me backwards into the cabin wall.  While pinned, I looked into her blackened eyes.  Her face looked semi-human but was horribly disfigured.  Her skin was melted and the veins in her face were blackened as well.  She looked as if she were trapped between the world of the dead and the the world of the living.  I had never felt so afraid in my life.  She brushed her body up against mine and pulled my face in, as she her self leaned in close enough to kiss me.  I felt her teeth bite down on my bottom lip and the piercing of her teeth hurt so much that it brought tears to my eyes.  She continued to bite all the way through and then pulled back, ripping the bottom part of my mouth away with her.  The pain was immense and all I could do was let out a scream.  The fires of hell that cursed her, fused to me during her intimate exchange and began swallowing me.  I could feel my clothes melt into me from the intense amount of heat, as well as my skin scorching.

looked down and I saw droplets of my skin hit the floor and I began to go into shock.  I instantly fell to the ground and started convulsing.  I was spitting blood from the missing bottom part of my mouth and I was unable to keep the blood from draining down my throat.  I struggled to get air.  The heat surrounding me didn’t help either.  The foul demon approached me and knelt down while gently running her hand through my hair.  I looked up at her and was surprised to see that her figure had changed.  She wasn’t the ghoul that kissed me, but a rather attractive maiden.  This time all I could see was hate and sadness trapped in her eyes.  She continued petting my head in a comforting way, but the fire radiating from her body continued to ignite every part of me into a hotter than hell inferno.  She stared at me and softly uttered the final words "I condemn you to Oblivion…”  in my ear. After that, the melting skin from my face ran down into my eyes fusing them shut….  It wasn't long before the pain eventually left and I was able to open my eyes.  I was laying in a grassy meadow and heard the music.  I came toward it, and here I am.”

e were all in shock at the fellow's story and gave him glances of disgust--he was a monster.
The reaper continued his melody which was eating away at our will.  The reaper’s black eyes filled with a night-mist and he spoke: "Those such as yourself have the fortune of dying two deaths….and you can only die twice.”  After this, the reaper played vivaciously and with each stroke of the fiddle, Virgil's skin was deeply pierced.  The wounds seemed to manifest from within his body and we couldn't actually see what was cutting away. They looked like they would have been caused by a scythe....  Virgil let out cries of pain as he was flayed into nothingness.  Black shadows flowed out of his body where blood should have been.

is eyes rolled up in his head as he fell back, but was suspended in air.  When he opened his mouth, maggots by the hundreds came out and covered his face.  They also pecked away at him eventually eating away at his eyes.  It all happened so fast--it must have been only minutes before there was nothing left of him.  The maggots also ate the left overs of his cut up body that lay on the ground.  It was sickening.  The reaper told us: "The second death leads to Oblivion, and in it, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth”.
